ULTRASOUND PHYSICS
An understanding of the principles of ultrasound physics is essential in the interpretation of your clinical ultrasound examinations. This understanding will enable you to determine what you are visualising, the formation and the relevance of artifacts, how the images relate to potential clinical diagnoses, and importantly the avoidance of potential pitfalls in your imaging. Furthermore an understanding of the physics enables understanding of probe selection, utilising correct mode selections, attaining image optimisation, and importantly safe use of clinical ultrasound including potential bio-effects.
ULTRASOUND PHYSICS WHERE TO START
As part of your credentialing you will need to undertake a structured courses meeting ACEM requirements, this includes an adequate ultrasound physics component.
ULTRASOUND EDUCATION PROGRAMS (ACEM GUIDELINE)
FOAM EDUCATION ULTRASOUND PHYSICS
There are extensive FOAM education resources on ultrasound physics which provide an easy introduction and varying degree of detail. Below are some links to FOAM education on ultrasound physics. Dr Dan Kim provides and easy introduction to physics and knobology, and Dr Jo Deverill (@FlippEM) has produced a great accessible series covering basic ultrasound physics.
Ultrasound physics by Dr Sam Orde (Nepean Hospital ICU) provides an in-depth series of lectures on the physics of ultrasound aimed at those undertaking a more advanced qualification in clinical ultrasound.
